Dear Readers, It is not often in our context that we think that dance could well be theatre. We talk of movement and we speak of dance theatre, and indeed we hark back to our more traditional forms of the performing arts where the two naturally co-existed, but rarely have we drawn upon the full resources that dance has to offer to our theatre. What is even more worrying is that by and large, theatre in our times seems to exist in a vacuum, and our alienation from dance, or from the ways in which it has evolved in our country, is only part of a much larger problem that our theatre, in spite of much promise, has been suffering from. These may not be happy thoughts but the upcoming performances and events this month do give us an opportunity to look beyond the confines of what we usually regard as theatre. And for Mumbai, these are rare events. Take Astad Deboo, widely regarded as one of India's foremost contemporary dancers, but who has not performed in the city since quite some time. Or Padmini Chettur, the iconic Chandralekha's protégé, who has developed a unique voice and style for herself. Her production, beautiful thing 2 was commissioned by the Singapore Arts Festival for this year. At a one day exhibition, organized by the Clark House Initiative, Padmini will present material from her work on 12th September. Earlier, on 9th September atJnanapravaha, you canhear Astad Deboo speak of his journey as a dancer. Joining him in conversation will be theatre person and filmmaker Sunil Shanbag and architect and designer Ratan Battliboi. Another new event for Mumbai is the Park's New Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts, organised by the Chennai based Prakriti foundation. The festival will showcase three productions that includes Delhi based artiste, Maya Krishna Rao in her 'The Non Stop Car-Food-Clothes-Feel-Good- Our other updates for this week include a review of Rangshila's production of Badal Sircar's TEESVEEN SHATABDI, directed by Avneesh Mishra and information aboutAstitva's Marathi One-Act play competition.
